These honey chipotle BBQ chicken wings are sticky, smoky, and just the right amount of spicy. Roast, air-fry, or finish them on the grill for crisp skin and a glossy sweet-heat glaze that makes them perfect for game day, parties, or an easy weekend dinner.
Preheat the oven to 200C (180C fan) or preheat the air fryer to 180C. Pat the chicken wings dry, then place them in a large bowl with the vegetable oil and chipotle seasoning. Toss until the wings are evenly coated.
For oven cooking, arrange the wings in a single layer on a foil-lined baking tray and roast for 40-45 minutes, turning once halfway through. For air frying, cook for about 35 minutes, shaking the basket or turning the wings halfway through. The wings should be browned, crisp at the edges, and cooked through.
Carefully drain off any excess fat. In a large bowl, whisk together the cider vinegar, barbecue sauce, honey, and chipotle paste. Add the hot wings and toss well to coat them in the sauce.
Return the coated wings to the oven or air fryer for 5 minutes to let the glaze caramelize. If using a barbecue, grill the sauced wings over high heat for 3-4 minutes per side instead. Serve hot.
Patting the wings dry helps them crisp up better. Adjust the chipotle paste to control the heat, and use your favorite smoky BBQ sauce for a deeper flavor. Leftover wings can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or air fryer until hot and crisp.
