A nutritious and delicious homemade meal for your furry friend, packed with omega-3 fatty acids and essential vitamins. This simple two-layer bake is easy to digest and makes for a perfect special treat or healthy food topper.
Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan/gas mark 6). Open the sardine cans and drain the olive oil into a medium-sized mixing bowl.
Add the thinly sliced sweet potato and fresh thyme leaves to the bowl with the sardine oil. Toss well until every potato slice is thoroughly coated.
In a small ovenproof baking dish (approximately 25cm x 15cm), arrange half of the sweet potato slices in an even layer across the bottom.
Roughly mash the sardines with a fork and spread them evenly over the first potato layer. Top with the remaining sweet potato slices.
Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil to retain moisture. Bake for about 45 minutes, or until the potatoes are very tender when pierced with a sharp knife.
Remove from the oven and allow the bake to cool completely to room temperature before serving a portion to your dog.
Ensure the sardines are in olive oil or water, not brine, as high salt content is unhealthy for dogs. For dogs with sensitive stomachs, you can peel the sweet potato before slicing. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
